Tools Needed to Install One-Piece Closet in Your Bathroom

If you want your bathroom to look great after the installation of one piece closet, you need the following tools and materials:

  • Cross screwdrivers
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Wax ring
  • Toilet bowl flange
  • Putty knife
  • Level
  • Tape
  • Bucket and sponge
  • Water supply kit

With these items, you are all ready to make the installation process smoother and faster.

Preparation Process

Close the water supply.

  • Locate the shut-off valve near your toilet, which is generally on the wall behind the toilet.
  • Turn off the valve clockwise to stop the water supply
  • Flush the old toilet to drain as much water as possible from the tank and bowl
  • Use a sponge and bucket to remove extra water so that water does not spill during installation

Remove the Old Toilet

  • This step is for those who need to replace the old toilet with a new one.
  • Remove the old toilet first
  • Disconnect the water supply line from the toilet tank
  • Loosen the nuts using the wrench securing the toilet to the floor bolts
  • Lift the old toilet off the bolts and put it aside
  • Check the flange for any damages and clean the residue from the old wax ring

Check the Plumbing and Flange if Exists

  • Check the existing plumbing and toilet flange
  • Check the flange level and ensure it is securely attached to the floor
  • Damaged or corroded flange must be replaced immediately with a new one
  • Double-check the water supply line and ensure it's positioned correctly for the new toilet.

Step-by-Step Guide to Install One-Piece Closet for Your Bathroom

Install the Floor Bolts and L-Bar

  • The toilet bowl flange is a crucial element connecting the toilet to the drainpipe. It secures it to the floor.
  • Position the toilet bowl flange over the drainpipe and align the bolt slots with the floor bolts.
  • Put the floor bolts into the flange slots. Make sure they are well-positioned and are spaced evenly.
  • For L-Bar toilets, you need to give additional support. You need to install it by securing it to the flange and as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Floor bolts and L-Bar give stability, so ensure the toilet gets firmly anchored to the floor.
  • Install the flange properly and keep the toilet stable

Install Wax Ring

  • After the flange is appropriately placed, install the wax ring.
  • The wax ring seals the water that comes between the toilet and the flange.
  • Place the wax ring on the bottom of the toilet bowl outlet or flange itself.
  • To prevent leaks, make sure it is centered and securely placed
  • Lower the toilet onto the flange once the wax ring gets positioned.

Position and Install the Toilet

  • Lift the toilet and position it carefully over the flange.
  • Make sure the floor bolts pass through the holes in the base of the toilet
  • Just lower the toilet gently and allow the wax ring to compress and create a tight seal
  • After the toilet is in place, gently press the seat but firmly on the floor.
  • Attach the washers and nuts to floor bolts, and tighten them with a wrench
  • Do not overtighten as it can bring crack to the porcelain

Connect with the Supply Line

  • Reconnect the water supply line to the toilet fill valve
  • Use Teflon tape on valve threads, ensuring a tight seal
  • Connect it tightly with your hands and then use an adjustable wrench for an extra quarter turn
  • Do not overtighten it as it may damage threads and cause leaks.
  • After connection, check the water supply for any leaks.

Install the Cover Cap and Tighten the Bolts

  • Install all the decorative cover caps all over the floor bolts.
  • This gives the toilet a finished look.
  • Tighten the bolts if necessary and ensure the toilet is secured but not over-tightened
  • Cover caps protect the bolts from corrosion.

Install Your One-Piece Toilet Seat

  • Install the toilet on a one-piece toilet by aligning the seat hinges with the mounting holes on the toilet bowl.
  • Through the holes, insert the bolts and tighten them with hands underneath.
  • After the seat is in place, check whether it opens and closes quickly.
  • Close the lid and give a test to ensure seamless opening and closing.

Things to Consider

Check for Leaks

  • Before you start installing, make sure there are no leaks in the water supply line and connections.
  • Slowly turn on the water supply and allow the tank to fill. In the meantime, you inspect the connections.
  • Check the toilet base, supply line connection, and tank for any signs of water leakage.
  • Tighten the connections if needed.

Make Sure Proper Water Flow

  • After the toilet is installed, turn on the water supply test the toilet by flushing it.
  • Make sure the water flow is consistent and the toilet gets refilled correctly.
  • If there are any unusual sounds, this may indicate any problem.
  • If everything is functioning well, your installation is complete.
  • You are now ready to use your one-piece closet.
